Manmohan Singh was born at Gah in Chakwal district in 1932, in a village with no electricity, and walked several kilometres to school. The family came across in 1947.
He took degrees at Panjab University, Cambridge and Oxford, taught economics, and served as chief economic adviser, governor of the Reserve Bank and deputy chairman of the Planning Commission.
As finance minister from 1991 he presented the budget that opened the Indian economy after a balance of payments crisis. He was Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, the first Sikh to hold the office.
The village of Gah was located and identified in 2004 after he became Prime Minister. Pakistan declared it a model village and its school was renamed for him. He never went back.
He apologised in Parliament in 2005 for the killings of Sikhs in Delhi in 1984, which no head of government had done before.
He died in December 2024.
