Bhai Dharam Singh Ji was the second of the Panj Piare, a Jat from Hastinapur near Meerut, who stood up when the call for a head was made a second time at Anandpur in 1699.
With Bhai Daya Singh Ji he carried the Zafarnama from Dina in the Malwa to Aurangzeb in the Deccan.
He was at Chamkaur and was one of the three who left the garhi with the Guru on the order of the Panj Piare.
He went south and died at Nanded.
That two of the five came from outside Punjab, from Hastinapur and Bidar, and that the other three came from Lahore, Jagannath Puri and Dwarka, is the fact about 1699 most often stated and least often thought about.
The tradition gives Hastinapur as his origin and says he came to Anandpur some years before 1699. As with the other four of the Panj Piare, everything reported of his life before the amrit sanchar is tradition rather than record.
The Zafarnama was carried to Aurangzeb in the Deccan, a journey of well over a thousand miles through hostile country, and delivered. That the letter reached its addressee at all is the part of the account most often passed over.
He is remembered at Nanded, where he died, and a gurdwara there is associated with him. There is no shrine at Hastinapur.
